Four facts that change the job

  • Over 10 m² needs a licence SafeWork NSW licenses the removal of any amount of friable asbestos and of more than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos. Below that area NSW says a homeowner may remove bonded asbestos, though it strongly recommends a licensed removalist.
  • Test before you touch You cannot identify asbestos by looking at it: only a sample tested at a NATA-accredited laboratory confirms it. The council and the NSW Government both say buildings from before 1990 may contain it.
  • The tip is booked, not open Summerhill takes asbestos by booking only, on weekday mornings, packed to its own rules, and refuses a load that is not. Lake Macquarie's Awaba facility also has to be pre-booked.
  • Neighbours hear first For licensed work the removalist must notify SafeWork NSW at least five calendar days ahead and give notice to the neighbours. The council recommends telling them before any removal.

Asbestos Removal across Newcastle

Two councils cover this area and they publish different rules. The City of Newcastle runs its own landfill, Summerhill Waste Management Centre on Minmi Road in Wallsend, which the council says is licensed to receive asbestos waste; it takes asbestos by booking and charges A$584 a tonne for 2026/27. Lake Macquarie City Council says asbestos can go to its Awaba Waste Management Facility, but only if it is pre-booked, and that asbestos and fibro sheets are not taken in its bulky waste collection. Three of Newcastle's heritage conservation areas are in Hamilton, and the council says complying development generally cannot be carried out in one, so a demolition there starts with a planning certificate before it starts with a removalist.
